Germany 2006 – Round of 16 play starts

The first Round of 16 matches were played in World Cup Soccer in Germany 2006.  The Germans dominated Sweden in game one while Argentina needed overtime to edge Mexico in the other match.

World Cup Match 49:  Germany (2) vs Sweden (0)

Lukas Podolski scored two goals in the first twelve minutes in the first quarterfinal match of Germany 2006.  The Swedes played with 10 men from the 35th minute of the game when defender Lucic was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the match.  Germany clearly out shot the Swedes as they directed 11 of their 26 shots on goal compared to 2 of 5 for the Swedes.  World Cup Match Summary

World Cup Match 50:  Argentina (2) vs Mexico (1)

Argentina needed a goal in overtime to edge Mexico 2-1 in World Cup play.  This was a thrilling game to watch! 

The Mexicans got on the board first when Borgetti back-headed a free-kick to Rafael Marquez who, sliding toward the goal feet first, deflected the ball into the back of the net in the 6th minute.  Hernan Crespo of Argentina responded 4 mintues later when he deflected a corner kick into the right side of the net.

Maxi Rodriguez scored what was to be the game winner in the 98 minute of the match.  Rodriquez collected a crossed ball on his chest and sent an explosive volley into the top right corner of the net.  It was one of the best goals of the tournament.  Soccer Match Summary

Germany will play Argentina in the first quarterfinal match of Germany 2006 on June 30th in Berlin (17:00 local time).
